This Satirical Thriller
The filmmaker's bold satire addresses the tyranny of feminine aesthetics and the dreaded aspects of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a masterful performance playing Elisabeth, an aging actress forced into hosting a workout series on television. Pushed out thanks to her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome treatment titled the Substance. This generates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a progressively toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This classic whodunit thriller stars Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, an ace reporter who takes a hiatus from covering global conflict to embark on an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other affluent passengers. Presence
Steven Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this innovative supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to appear at a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, evening, Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has made the local kids anxious. Once Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, late evening, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4

This period's second offering from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as tight as the polo necks used by Fassbender's intelligence officer. Both actors are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty develops. Additional actors join in the intelligent intelligence fun.
