The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
